A new tax for traveling to Thailand

Are you planning a trip to Thailand this summer? Are you wondering about the new procedures you need to know? Please note that from now on you will have to pay a new tourist tax. How much is this tax? Who are the travelers affected? What will it be used for?

Tourist tax to travel to Thailand: a measure studied at length

The tourist tax project was initially supposed to come into force in January 2022. Subsequently, it was delayed to April of the same year and then to January 2023. However, and since the collection of this tax required new arrangements at airports, it was necessary to postpone its official implementation. Thus, it will come into force from June 2023. Its amount will be 300 baht (8 €).

Who is concerned ?

All travelers wishing to stay in Thailand must pay this new tax. Whether it is a tourist visa or a business visa, be prepared to pay the amount quoted above. However, we can mention a few exceptions:

  • Traveler in possession of a work permit
  • Visitor who presents a border pass
  • Thai passport holder
  • Citizen resident in the country

The purpose of this new tax

According to the declarations of the authorities concerned, the sums obtained will be allocated to anchor the concept of sustainable tourism. Indeed, it is about the development of more tourist destinations to refresh this sector in the long term. Likewise, part will be used for offer versatile support to tourists in the event of an accident. This coverage is valid in the event of a riot or terrorist attack but also facing a natural disaster. This insurance provides coverage up to until 13.506 € which is equivalent to 500,000 baht.

Tourism in Thailand: a renaissance expected for 2023

In 2022, the Kingdom of Thailand hosted approximately 11.8 million tourists. For the current year, the objective is to make all the necessary arrangements for the reception of 25 million visitors.

Given that Chinese tourists will once again be active in international tourism, this very optimistic threshold could actually be achieved. You should know that this category of travelers was very active before the pandemic. Indeed, among the 40 million tourists who visited Thailand in 2019, there were no less than 11 million Chinese.

Based on the same forecasts announced by the Minister of Tourism and Sports, tourists spending their vacations in Thailand will spend around 66 billion euros.
