From 1st January 2025Thailand is preparing to transform access to its territory with the introduction of a e-Visa accessible in all of its 94 embassies and consulates around the world. This significant change in the country's welcome policy will considerably simplify administrative procedures for travellers, putting an end to long waits for visas. With just a few clicks on the official website, future visitors will now be able to apply at any time, making their travel experience smoother and more enjoyable.
From 1 January 2025, Thailand will roll out a new e-Visa system, making obtaining a visa more accessible and seamless for travellers from around the world. This innovation, announced by Thailand's Foreign Minister, promises to make travel formalities considerably easier, by allowing applicants to submit their applications online.
Thailand's landmark decision is part of a wider effort to modernise and simplify entry procedures. Thanks to e-Visa, a previously lengthy and bureaucratic visa application process will now take just a few clicks. Travellers wishing to discover Thailand's sunny beaches and culture will be able to apply online at www.thaievisa.go.th.
Simplified procedures for everyone
The introduction of this system will not only benefit business travellers, but also tourists and students. Currently, the visa application process often involves long waits at embassies, accompanied by a multitude of documents. With e-Visa, applicants will be able to submit their information and pay their fees online, drastically reducing processing time.
Through this initiative, Thailand aims to attract even more visitors, while ensuring a smoother and more secure entry experience. In addition, tourism is an essential component of the Thai economy, and this initiative aims to encourage visitors from different countries to choose Thailand as their preferred destination.
Who will need an e-Visa?
That said, it is important to note that e-Visa is not for all travellers. Currently, nationals of 93 countries can benefit from visa-free travel for stays of up to 60 days, with the possibility of a 30-day extension on the spot. The e-Visa will therefore be particularly useful for people wishing to stay longer than 60 days or for those coming from countries that do not benefit from this exemption.
The nationalities involved are varied and include countries such as Germany, Australia, France, Canada and most European countries. Travellers should therefore check their eligibility before starting the online procedures to avoid any confusion.
An overview of electronic visas on arrival
Alongside the e-Visa, Thailand also offers an electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) for nationals of 18 countries. This system allows travellers like those fromSaudi Arabia, China or India obtain their visa directly on arrival at certain airports. This option provides additional flexibility for those who book their trips at the last minute, while continuing to simplify entry formalities.
The ETA system announced for 2025
With the introduction of e-Visa, Thailand is also preparing for the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for visa-exempt travellers, scheduled for 2025. This development could give rise to some concern, due to possible confusion between the e-Visa and the ETA, a situation already encountered in other countries. It will therefore be crucial for travellers to make sure they are properly informed about the relevant procedures that are best suited to them, in order to avoid any inconvenience during their trip.
